Protein, Cell, and Tissue Dynamics

This web site was built for a biology laboratory group at the University of Guelph. Primary goals included the ability to update the site content easily, as well as the centralization of laboratory documentation. The implementation of an internal Protocols section allowed users to easily find protocols, as well as enabled sharing of common protocols between professors. Equipment booking functionality was written as a new feature, and is available as the Resource Conflict module for Drupal under the GPL.

Every member of the lab is able to create their own custom profile page, complete with research descriptions and images.

Lab members with the appropriate permissions can create and edit pages. This example shows the use of a rich text editor to automatically create HTML, as well as the ability to insert pages into the navigation system.

Lab members can book equipment use through the website. Conflicts with previously scheduled bookings are displayed, and the user is required to choose a non-conflicting time. Conflict detection was a new feature which has been released to the public, available at the Resource Conflict project page.

Lab equipment is listed with both a photo and a description for quickly bringing new lab members up to speed.

Lab members can post events to a shared calendar, which can then be viewed online or exported to a calendaring application or mobile device. Schedules can also be imported from any standards-compliant calendar server.

Publications in journals can be uploaded as PDF's, complete with citations and information about the published journal.

Photos and videos can be uploaded and categorized into albums for display. Once a photo is uploaded to the site, it can be inserted into any page through an image browser.

The content of this page was completely created and entered into the website by a member professor. No members of the website had any prior knowledge of HTML or web site publishing. Effective use of images helps to draw the reader in.

This simple and clear home page both provides links to the two main components of the website as well as a login field for members of the lab.
